Long lens lore

It’s been a busy week and I’ve been tired, but overall everything has been good. I’ve been playing catch-up at work from being sick last week, and still a little bit from my trip to Las Vegas.

Aside from work my friend Tye has been in town and I’ve seen him a couple of times. He had played with Blinky (my new workstation) when he was in town earlier and decided that he could really use a modern machine. He ordered it through PC Club and I was going to pick it up and configure it for him. When we got it there was a bit of a hassle because the SATA controller was bad. It took me a day or so to figure this out, after having to buy (of all the old things) a floppy drive so that I could load the newest drivers for the controller to eliminate that as a possibility. After I finally got it working I was able to give it to Tye, and I think he will really enjoy the performance when he’s working in Photoshop.

Tonight was the annual WSA Industry Achievement Awards. I ended up having to go with my work and sit through yet another long boring ceremony and dinner. It was insufferably hot and I’ve been tired so it really was not fun at all. They had this one video about the future of technology with a bunch of clips of teenagers talking about this program that introduced them to technology. I’m amazed that they aired it because I have never seen a stupider grouping of ugly teenagers spouting the stupidest things about “the future”! *sigh* Am I just doomed to be old, cynical, and bitter about new fangled things just like every generation?

On a plus note my shipment from Adorama Camera came in today! I got my new 28-135mm IS USM lens and boy am I pleased - I'll post a full review of it in a couple of weeks. I also got the Lowepro Computrekker AW backpack and I’m really excited to be able to carry my entire studio (including my laptop) with me everywhere I go. It should really help me miss less of those “opportunity shots”.

This way to sin city

After a long and jittery day taking care of stuff with Tye we are finally on the plane and headed to Las Vegas. The day has been full of anticipation and some such, but without too much of particular note so far. After a quick trip up to Kenmore Camera (where I got a new extension tube for my lens collection), Tye and I went to the Center for Wooden Boats to shoot some pictures and take advantage of the bright sunny day. I'll probably post at least one of those pictures, but as most of my readers have noticed I've been slacking on the photo posting of late. Typepad does make it easy to upload and sort them, but giving each one a description can be a pain in the ass.

After the photos Tye and I headed down the airport early because we were both excited to get going, and sitting around my condo was getting old fast. Upon reaching the airport and checking our baggage I was delighted to discover that Tye had been selected for the "less than completely invasive" search while I was able to whisk through security with nothing but a walk through the metal detector. After waiting for him to get done having his life inspected and shoes checked for explosives we headed down the concourse to wait for our plane. Being early to the airport means one thing and one thing only - drinking... A few drinks in one of the airport bars helped pass the time - mostly spent reading an interesting new book on using Photoshop CS for digital photo retouching and color correction. I'm already fairly comfortable with Photoshop, but reading a book like that is a great way to learn new techniques and ways to use tools that I had not considered.

So here I sit on a plane bound for Sacramento for a brief layover then off to the city of glitz and glitter for a weekend of fun. Cramped, tight, and bored - sounds like another day at plant!

After we got in we went to our hotel after a quick drive down the strip. I have to comment of what an experience it was to drive down a 2 mile stretch of road that exists solely to stimulate and excite the human mind and body. Bright flashing lights at exciting tempos flare from every direction, and loud happy noises penetrate the senses.

Our hotel was in the old downtown off Fremont Street. The photo gallery from Vegas has a panoramic view from our hotel room. Once we had settled in we went out to grab some food then passed out.

Morning came and off we went to a day of bustling activity. We grabbed breakfast from a buffet and headed down to the convention center to check out PMA. The PMA tradeshow was a bewildering event. One would imagine (or at least I would have) a room full of booths showing off new technology. PMA was that, only on an amazingly grand scale. Mile after mile of walking through splendid setups, large companies taking setting up temporarily structures more than twice the size of my condo proclaiming their products on high! The Epson booth had a contortionist in skin-tight clothing, the Kodak booth with its crazy French painter act, and Canon with its massive marketing displays and setups. Just as with the strip there were exciting noises erupting from every little booth, and eager friendly people vying for my attention to tell me about this amazing new product, or that new gadget.

There was some excellent new technology – Tye and I spent a decent amount of time hanging out around the Canon booth looking at their new bodies and lenses. I really like the new 1Ds Mark II, as well as the 28-300mmL IS USM lens. Someday I will have both of them, but not for some time as their combined price is several times higher than that of my car.

After wandering around for several hours we decided to head back to the strip for some food and to start shooting photos. We headed down to the Stratosphere and went up in the tower to take pictures of the strip from above. Unfortunately they (for no apparent reason) would not let us take our tripods up to the top, and after dealing with that hassle we did not get up until after dusk had settled into darkness. This made it very difficult to shoot with telephoto lenses given the long exposure times needed. Luckily we got a few good images to come out.

Saturday was a long day indeed. Tye and I spent most of it lugging heavy photography equipment on our backs (more my back if you ask me) up and down the strip shooting. We got to get fairly in depth with Cesar’s Palace, Bellagio, and the Luxor. The grand casinos on the strip really manage to boggle the mind. The excess, the bright color, the sounds, sights, and highly oxygenated air – it all adds up to one incredible experience. Looking back I should have taken it a little easier on myself, but I seemed drawn to experience it all and take every last detail in. We barely got to see 25% of the strip in detail, and it leaves me eager to come back again another year with a little bit more time and really get to know the strip. I would love to go around doing character studies on some of the homeless people who live around the strip.

Flying home was a minor nightmare in of itself. We got to the airport in plenty of time, but being valentines weekend there was a dreadful collection of people there all intent on journeying home. We barely made it through the security in time (literally 2 minutes before the plane taxied off the runway) and ended up getting no choice in seats. Tye got a decent one at the back of the plane, but I ended up at the very front of the plane stuck between two absolutely rotund women. By all rights they should have each paid for a second seat, and had to have the armrests up to even fit in their chairs. I was squeezed between them into a frighteningly small space. Luckily it was only a couple of hours and I managed to survive the flight back to Seattle.

This has been a long week – I wore myself out too much in Las Vegas and got fairly sick. I think it was a mild bronchitis but I’m not sure. I sit here on Sunday for the first time in 4 days feeling halfway healthy. I managed to keep up at work on Tuesday and Wednesday, but after a couple of meetings on Thursday I ended up going home to cough in peace on my couch. Friday was spent curled up into a ball drenched in DXM cough syrup waiting for my fever to break. After a peaceful Saturday I think I’m going to spend today quietly sitting around the house watching movies and working on photos from the last couple of weeks.

W00!

So Sunday came after Fish Friday's on Saturday (I might explain that someday) and the much awaited box was picked up. I got it home from the store and was horrified to discover that it has blinky lights the motherboard. I've since come to grips with them (as annoying as they are) and have named my computer Blinky.

Having all new hardware has it's disadvantages - the install was a bitch! It took several hours to get the Blinky working. Untill I got SP1 installed XP Professional was slow as dirt and had crashing problems. Once I got it all tackled I was ready to go. I have to say I'm thrilled with performance - not only is Photoshop CS silky smooth and responsive, but just using the computer is fun. Multitasking is a breeze and I can watch a fullscreen DivX on the TV out while I'm working in Photoshop without it getting laggy.

This is already turning into a long week. Not only am I getting all psyched out about going to PMA in Las Vegas, but I'm also trying to get work moving along so I'll be able to be away for 5 days without getting buried.

I broke down

So I've been needing a graphics workstation for a while, but have not had the $4000 that I would need to get it. After spending last night fighting with Photoshop CS on my PIII 1.33gz tablet I decided that I needed to at least get a barebones system lined up and ready to go. So $1800 later I'm the proud new owner of the base for what will become my baby:

Intel P4 3.2ghz 800FSB
2gb of PC3200 DDR 400
36gb 10,000RPM SATA system drive
120gb 7,200RPM SATA work drive (first of many)
EVGA FX5200 128mb nVidia Personal Cinema AGP
Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS soundcard
48x CDRW/DVD drive

*droolz* I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow. At last a machine that will keep up with me for a while :)

Getting closer

This has been a long busy week. I've been getting a lot done for sparktography, and things are starting to pick up at my day job too. I'm getting really excited about going to PMA in Las Vegas next weekend. Seeing the tradeshow will be cool, but the idea of doing my first "photo trip" and getting to shoot in a completely new enviroment hsa me jittering at the edge of my seat.

I got my tax return and am considering going to go buy a barebones workstation with it. I'm thinking that from there I can expand out and buy more RAM and harddrives. I just need somthing with 2 harddrives for now, and a faster system bus so photoshop will be happier.

Family, Happy, Sad...

It’s been a long week or so and I’ve been really busy so I have not been posting as often as I’d like. Late last week my parents were in town for my mom’s appointment with a doctor at Virginia Mason. It was nice to see them and good news came from my mom’s appointment. On Thursday night my parents and I went out for a nice sushi dinner before heading back to my place to chat away most of the evening before we all had to retreat to our respective bedtime rituals.

Come Friday (after a long day at work of hurry up and wait) I headed home and ate dinner with my parents again. This time we just did takeout and spent most of the evening chatting. I wish I lived closer to them – it’s always good to see them, and its frustrating to only see them a couple of times a year. It’s weird that we never got along that well as I was growing up, but now that I’m moved out I can’t see enough of them. After they left I went out shooting with my friend Tye in Belltown. I don’t spend much time down there so it was neat to go exploring with him and find some interesting details and scenes to capture.

Saturday was a mixed bag for me. I woke up early to have a parting brunch with my parents before they headed back to Walla Walla. That was fun, and Tombro dropped by Charlie’s and said hi to them. I spent most of the day crashed out on my couch till Brien called me at 6:00 and invited me to go to a suspension event. It’s something that I have always been curious about, but never seen or done. It was really cool to see the process and confirmed to me that it’s something that I want to try.

It was really good and bad seeing Brien. It was great to see him and hang out with him for 7 hours, but at the same time it reminded me how much I miss him, and made me realize that I’m still in love with him. It’s tough being in love with someone that for whatever reason can’t love me back. I know he has a lot on his plate right now, but it’s still frustrating.

More to come – I just need to find the time to write!
